Early Childhood Language Assessment

Postby Pacsl » Wed Mar 02, 2011 2:29 pm

What do you all use for the birth to three set for language assessment? I have used the PLS in the past, but find it's not as comprehensive as I'd like, and in my opinion it tends to overinflate. A colleague of mine went to a Carol Westby seminar and according to Carol, they actually used children w/ disabilities in the PLS standardization sample, which would explain the lower norms. I've used the CELF-P a couple of times and found it to be much better, but it only goes down to age 3. I have the MacArthur-Bates, which I like, but I'd like to look at more than just vocab, esp in the 2-year-olds. What about the REEL?

I am not familiar with REEL, but many test are not adequate for children that are 3-4 years old or younger.

The CYCLE (Curtiss-Yamada Comprehensive Language Evaluation) is for children as young as 1 1/2 years old though.
