Asperger's assessment

Postby SLPCANADA » Thu May 24, 2007 6:09 am

Hi,
I have not had alot of experience working with clients with Asperger's. Wondering what people would suggest in terms of assessment for a 7 year old boy with Asperger's. Also, informal assessment ideas are greatly appreciated as I have limited tests at my disposal. Thanks!

Asperger's assessment

I would recommend that you use the CASL which is published by AGS/Pearson. It will be good for not only this child but any person for whom you need an indepth language assessment. If you look at the AGS/Pearson website under speech and language assessments you will find a link to get lots of information about it.

Asperger's assessment

I'd recommend the CASL and the Pragmatics Profile from the CELF-4. The PP is a checklist for parents and teachers to complete in 3 areas of pragmatic skills. You want to look at those typical deficit areas for kids with Asperger's to include the following: inference skills, comprehending nonverbal communication, critical thinking, reasoning, pragmatic skills, taking another person's perspective, not dealing well with changes, and abstract thinking. They know the rules, follow them, and get upset when other kids break the rule... even for minor infractions. They have good semantic, syntax, and grammar skills but stick out socially in the classroom. They are the "odd" kids.
