Stuttering Onset at Age 10

Postby Pacsl » Thu Jun 21, 2012 2:46 pm

I recently evaled a 10-year old referred for stuttering. No history of stuttering and identical twin does not stutter, no other family history. Score on the TOCS fell into severe range, probably due to frequency. The individual stuttering events do not strike me as severe. He's definitely stuttering: word and part-word repetitions, prolongations, combinations of the two, and secondary behavior (eye rolling), but not a lot of tension. According to his dad: recent onset, no prior history of stuttering, and no former or current speech-language, social-emotional, or academic issues. The identical twin truly does not stutter and never has. No life events, stressors, meds, etc that would explain the change. Stuttering has remained stable for a few months (ever since onset). Very strange. Child notices it but doesn't see it as a problem. He's only coming because his parents are making him. He's cooperative but unmotivated. Is it my job to convince him that he's stuttering and that he needs to address it?
