screening
Please let me know how your schools handle screening. We screen All first, and third graders every year in the fall. Of course we screen all kindergarteners that come in for pre-school screening in the spring. We then check for those who did not come in during spring round up and screen those in the fall. During the year, we screen ALL reevaluations, even those who were in our program, but released. Do other schools do this? What does IDEA say about screening? Any thoughts on this topic would be much appreciated.

screening
In our state, the requirement for "formal" screening by SLPs is no longer. There is an overall screening that is completed by the kindergarten teachers and if there is a concern then we step in. When we did do it in years past, I found that generally the week before the Christmas vacation was a good time. Usually the children were excited about and looking forward to the time off from school. This length of time in kindergarten gave them enough time to feel a lilttle more comfortable with the whole process of school and what happened there.

screening
We screen all preschool students in the district. We used to screen all kindergarten students until the state lifted that requirement. I, of course, could continue to screen them all but I have found that our kindergarten staff is very adept at making referrals so the screenings turned out to be a waste of time for me. They already referred everyone!
We also used to be required to screen all students who were new to our school district but this, too, has changed.

screening
When I was at the elementary school level, we did the pre-school screenings, then basically referrals from teachers. When a new student to the schoolcame, the file was routed to each special ed. teacher as well, and we would look it over, but only screen the student if needed. Our staff was also good about referrals, and there was no set screening done at particular grade levels.
Now at the high school level, we have no set screening in place. The referral process is detailed and set up by the regular ed teachers, principal, etc.

I would be interested to hear about the screening assessments that are used at the primary school and pre-school level.
