What are people being told about Speech-language impaired students who are receiving speech services on a consult basis only? In CT, we are being told that this can no longer occur. If we state that the student is language impaired, then we must have some regular direct contact with the student. (e.g. once per month, 6 sessions per year). Is this the consensus?

Maybe it's the word "consulatative" and how it's used. I know I probably use it incorrectly b/c I will see the child 1 time every 6 weeks and I call that consultative. If I don't place the child (usually for ones with a mild vocab delay), I will collaborate with the teacher about ways to increase the child's vocabulary or go into the room and do a vocabulary rich lesson for all the kids.

I also call it "consult" when I see the student once a month. I meet with the teacher also.

We have consult status in Florida and see children say once a month, and there must be a goal on the IEP.

Debbie-
Carolyn Isakson is the source of the info. I believe it was also in an issue of last year's CSHA newsletter. Will search and let you know if I find anything.

I am also in CT and in our district we write IEP goals for consult but we do not see the student directly. For us consult means you consult with those who work with the child regarding strategies, monitoring carryover etc. Of course I am talking about identified students with an IEP. We also act as consultants to general education as a regular education initiative. I am curious to know who told you that we cannot use the consult model any longer. We haven't heard anything like that. I would like to know your source of info so that I can bring it up at our next department meeting.
