career day presentation

Postby rebeccaintx » Sat Oct 04, 2008 9:18 pm

My son is in kindergarten, and the teacher has requested that his father and I give a little talk about our jobs. This is to occur the last week of October. I need to take about 15 minutes, and so far the other parents that have gone before us have done a little talk, as well as a little craft or they've given goodie bags. Any ideas for me?

What a great idea your son's teacher has!!--sort of like high school "Career Day" for the little ones. Since your audience will be roughly 4-6 yr olds, how about incorporating what your job entails in a felt story board? You could have the usual people who comprise your work day as the felt characters (SLP, teacher, principal, ST students, their buddies on the playground, etc.),with any simple scenarios or storylines you want to convey. You could give a short introduction about what you do, but to keep their attention, you'll need to hook them in with something of high interest. Nearly every speech catalogue has goodies & give-aways that pertain to speech-language (pencils, stickers, etc), if you want to include something for them to take home. Or maybe a list of children's books that pertain to communication to hand out to parents --there are lists like this on the internet. Good luck! -- this is a golden opportunity to introduce the very young to our career.

I agree! Thank you for the suggestions! I might also visit some of the resources out there for Better Speech and Hearing Month...

Any ideas for the list of books would be appreciated!
