Hi!
I have a 3rd grader who is putting "uh" onto the ends of words -usually when he's not sure of what he's going to say next but it does not sound like the typical "ummm" we use alot when speaking. It makes his speech sound choppy and odd. An example is "my motheruh isuh going to the doctoruh and getting a checkup". Besides using a tape recorder to increase self-awareness, any other ideas?

adding "uh" onto words
I have a 6th grader who has been doing that for at least 3 years. I've been treating it as a type of stuttering. I encourage him to keep moving forward with his speech. We also have worked on various weaknesses in his expressive language. The stuttering is better when his subject is very familiar to him. We've also been working on his confidence.

adding "uh" onto words
hello
I also have a student on caseload that says 'uh' a lot! I had a moment of panic when I thought that he was stuttering. But after looking at all the other issues he has I came to the conclusion that his severe word finding problems were contributing. He is also not that great of a reader- this is where I see it more. So we are working on the WF issue but in the meantime, I ask him to read the sentence once and then turn his voice on and not turn it off until the end of the sentence. Or if it is spontaneos speech ask him to say it again with the same directions as when he reads.
hope this helps.
