frontal and lateral lisp

I'm taking a survey......what is the appropriate developmental age to begin working on frontal and lateral lisps? Also, how might I get information regarding Kessler's /s/ development program?

As far as the lateral production, that is deviant, not developmental and intervention can begin when it is found by the SLP. As far as the frontal production, that is developmental and in our school system we start therapy at CA 7 or so, if that is the only phoneme in error. Check out the new developmental norms with the GFTA-2.

It depends on the child. I have worked with a child (for lateral lisp) as early as kindergarten and have had very good success. I have also worked on it as late as 4th grade and have had the same results. But, I do find that the children who begin therapy earlier seem to have the best results for carry-over. Seems that 4th graders have to consciously work through it and I have seen periods of regression. As for the frontal lisp, I will take students at around the age of 7 years 6 months. If they have multiple articulation errors, I may take them in first grade or earlier.

In my district we serve lateral lisps in kg, but do not serve frontal lisps until 71/2.
I use Kessler's program and it is great! For the lateral lisps you usually stay on the "leaky T's" level a little longer than you would for a frontal lisp. But all in all the approach is the same for both lisps. The program teaches neutral tongue positioning and once the child understands the concept you go in to a more traditional approach for carryover.

I would like information about the Kessler's program that is mentioned quiet frequently. No one seems to respond as to where one can purchase this program. It would be helpful to have such information. I know I would like it as I have a girl that I am having trouble with carryover of a lisp. Maybe this program could help.

I have been working with a 10 yr old boy who has a frontal and lateral lisp. His frontal lisp has improved but his lateral lisp is still evident during spontaneous speech. When I ask him to smile, I have noticed that the corners of his mouth barely move backward. He has "chubby cheecks" and is a mouth breather and his voice always sounds nasal. He says that he is not aware of any allergies and doesn't take any allergy medicine. His tongue movements are fine, he can form a tongue bowl. I have tried many oral motor exercises with him. I have been working with him for 1-1/2 yrs. Does anyone have any ideas about what to do next? I really want to help this kid - thanks for any feedback.
