I was doing a phonological awareness lesson in one of my kindergarten classrooms. We had been talking about compound words, and how the two words mean something different than when they are put together. Using a SmartBoard, the next word that came up was "bulldozer". I didn't tell them what the word was but we immediately broke the word up and started to talk about the two parts. First, we decoded the word "bull" and discussed that it was a 'boy cow'. Then I asked them what they thought a "dozer" was. I thought one of them would say it was a machine. But no one had a suggestion for what a "dozer" was. Then I asked them, "What do you think a bulldozer is". One little girl in the back of the room held up her hand and said, "I think it is a boy cow that is sleeping." |
